Health Education Teacher Education Endorsement

This plan of study will satisfy the Illinois State Board of Education's (ISBE) requirements for a secondary endorsement in Health Education:

Minimum 24 credit hours of approved content, of which a minimum are 12 credit hours of courses numbered 200 or higher.

This plan also meets the approval of the Department of Health Sciences, earning the candidate the institution's recommendation for secondary level endorsement in Health Education by the ISBE.

To successfully complete the endorsement plan of study, and earn the recommendation for endorsement by the Department of Health Sciences, the candidate must complete each course with a grade of C or higher and successfully pass the ISBE State Content Test in Health Education. All Teacher Education students must maintain a GPA of 2.5.

• HSC 391 – Curriculum & Evaluation in School Health
• HSC 292 – Community Public Health
• HSC 387 - Programs in School Health (fall only)
 (Prerequisite HSC 290.2 & HSC 292)

Courses in the Department of Health Sciences are major blocked each semester. A limited number of seats are available for endorsement candidates in each course. Non-majors are prioritized by need and notified about overrides into HSC 190 and 293 in March via ilstu.edu.

Overrides may be requested on-line beginning on the first day of advanced registration. Go to the Health Sciences' departmental website at www.healthsciences.ilstu.edu and then click on 'academic advising'. One of the options there is 'override request form'. Use this form to request overrides into courses taught in the HSC department. Courses taught outside of HSC are managed by the department offering the course.

It is recommended that candidates meet with the HSC advisor to create a long term plan of study for the endorsement in HETE.

Community Health Education Minor

Twenty-four (24) total hours in Community Health Education course work is required to fulfill the requirements for the minor.

Required Courses

Six courses (18 hours) are required.

  • HSC 190: Foundations of Health Education
  • HSC 290: Strategies in Health Education
  • HSC 294: Diseases of the Human Body
  • HSC 296: Concepts in Health Education
  • HSC 292: Community Public Health
  • HSC 293: Principles of Human Disease

Elective Courses

Two additional elective courses (6 hours) are required from among the following options. Other advanced level Health Sciences courses may be substituted as electives with the consent of the Health Sciences advisor.

  • HSC 105: Medical Terminology
  • HSC 208*: Dynamics of United States Contemporary Health Issues
  • HSC 387: Disaster Preparedness
