Medical Laboratory Technician to Medical Laboratory Science (MLT-to-MLS) Bridge program

Illinois State University offers an online Medical Laboratory Technician to Medical Laboratory Science (MLT-to-MLS) Bachelor of Science degree for those who hold current certification as an MLT or CLT.  Most students will need a completed associate degree to qualify for this option.  
 
To qualify for the MLT-to-MLS Bridge  program, you must:

  • Satisfy the university’s admission criteria for transfer applicants,
  • Have one of the following:
    • a completed A.A.S. degree granted within the past seven years from an accredited school in CLT/MLT 
    • military training in MLT,
  • Hold a current MLT certification from ASCP Board of Certification or American Medical Technologists,
  • A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
     

Proficiency Credit:  32 credit hours will be granted in the form of proficiency credit toward the Bachelor of Science degree when students successfully complete 6 credit hours of on-line course work at Illinois State University with a minimum 2.5 GPA.  Proficiency credit will be granted for the following required major courses: HSC 260, HSC 261, HSC 262, HSC 263, HSC 301, HSC 308 and 12 semester hours of professional practice.

 
On-line Course Work: Students will be allowed to enroll in on-line course work after documenting MLT certification and completion of BSC 197, BSC 160, CHE 140, CHE 141 and MAT 120 or an equivalent course (these are prerequisites for the courses for which the student will receive proficiency credit). 
 
Graduation Requirements: A Bachelor of Science degree in MLS from Illinois State University requires the following:

  1. Completion of at least 120 total credit hours
  2. An overall GPA of 2.5 plus grades of C or higher in each course required by the MLS major
  3. Successful completion of the MLS major
  4. Successful completion of General Education Requirements 
  5. Successful completion of degree requirements such as AMALI, IDEAS, SMT and specific hours’ requirements
